The impact of the collision was so severe that some of the coaches of the passenger trains were crushed and overturned, trapping hundreds of people inside. The scene was horrific, with blood, broken limbs and bodies scattered around. Many passengers managed to escape through the windows and doors, while others waited for help to arrive.

The rescue operation was launched immediately, with more than 50 ambulances, several fire service units and three National Disaster Response Force teams reaching the site. Hundreds of young people also lined up outside a government hospital in Soro to donate blood for the victims. The injured were rushed to various hospitals in Balasore, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
The death toll is expected to rise further, as some of the bodies are still trapped under the debris. The authorities have also issued an emergency contact number - 06782-262286 - for people to get information about their relatives and friends.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high-level inquiry and assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible. He also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the incident and said he will visit the mishap site today. He also said that rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected. He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed his grief and said he will visit the site of the accident on Saturday morning to review the situation. He also said that his government will provide all possible support to the victims and their families.

The Odisha train accident has shocked and saddened the entire nation. It has also raised serious questions about the safety and maintenance of the railway infrastructure in India, which has a history of rail disasters. According to a report by NITI Aayog, India's railway network is one of the most congested and overburdened in the world, with more than 23 million passengers travelling daily on about 13,000 trains. The report also said that between 2014 and 2019, there were 586 accidents on Indian railways, resulting in 1,011 deaths and 2,118 injuries.
